Patron Saint of Ukraine & Patron of the Reunion Between Orthodox and Catholics

Josaphat was born in Ukraine and lived in Vilnius, Lithuania (home of the Original Image of Divine Mercy), where in 1604 he joined an Orthodox monastery. In 1595 the Orthodox Metropolitan of Kiev and five Orthodox bishops representing millions of Ukrainian and Belarusian faithful met in the city of Brest and signed the Union of Brest Declaration entering into union with the Bishop of Rome. The Pope accepted their conversion from Orthodox to Catholic, while allowing them to keep their Byzantine liturgical rites and traditions, forming the Catholics of the Eastern Rite. Josaphat was later named a Bishop in present day Belarusia and successfully curtailed Orthodox clergy from exercising ministry in his diocese. In 1623, Josaphat was ambushed by Orthodox faithful who cleaved off his head and dumped his body into a river. The word "ecumenism" did not even exist when Josaphat was martyred. Josaphat was canonized in 1867 and his remains are buried under the altar of Saint Basil in St. Peter’s Basilica.
